Press Release Summary: Fiction, nonfiction writers will hone their work in new course exploring the art of revision
Press Release Body: TROY, NY-A longtime editor who has worked with hundreds of successful authors in a publishing career that spans more than 35 years will lead area writers of book-length fiction and nonfiction in an intensive exploration of the art of revision, in one of numerous new writing classes beginning soon at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy.
"The Second Draft: Mastering Revisions" will begin Monday, May 5, and run for six weeks at the center, 265 River St. in downtown Troy. The class will be led by longtime editor and book doctor Sandi Gelles-Cole, whose 35-year career in publishing includes editing hundreds of books-including numerous bestsellers-by a diverse range of authors from Alan Dershowitz to the late Gov. Ann Richards, Tonya Lewis-Lee, Crystal McCrary Anthony, and Letitia Baldridge, among many others.
In The Arts Center class, Gelles-Cole will work with both fiction and nonfiction writers to help them learn to examine and revise their manuscripts (or book proposals) with a more objective eye before sending them out to the market.
For fiction writers, topics covered will include making sure characters have psychological integrity throughout the book; the plot has no smoking guns, loose ends or screaming illogical leaps; and the craft is as refined as the author can make it without a professional editor.
For non fiction, the focus will be on assuring oneself that the architecture of the book fits the subject matter and is consistent throughout; making certain all subjects that should be covered are covered and no extraneous subjects are included, and refining the craft to the best of the author\'s ability. Similar criteria will be applied to non fiction book proposals.
The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through June 16. Tuition is $250 for members of The Arts Center or the Hudson Valley Writers Guild and $275 for others. /
Enrollment is limited to ten students, who are asked to submit a first draft or at least one half of a manuscript with a complete synopsis of the balance in advance. Complete book proposals will also be accepted. These materials should be submitted by April 23. "The Second Draft: Mastering Revisions" is one of several new writing courses being offered in a recently expanded literary arts program at The Arts Center, with classes beginning soon in poetry, memoir and personal essay writing, humor writing, food writing and more. Registration information and details about the overall writing program are available at www.artscenteronline.org Gelles-Cole, founder and president of Gelles-Cole Literary Enterprises, has acquired, edited and collaborated on many best-selling books in hardcover, mass market and trade paperback. Her editorial agency was founded in September of 1983. Since then, she has worked with authors and their projects such as Karen Siff Exkorn\'s The Autism Sourcebook (Regan Books/Harper Collins); Governor Ann Richards\' I\'m Not Slowing Down (Dutton); Christiane Northrup\'s Women\'s Bodies, Women\'s Wisdom: The Mind/Body Connection and its Effect on Women\'s Health Issues (Bantam Books); Letitia Baldrige\'s Guide to the New Manners (Scribner\'s); The Gotham Diaries by Tonya Lewis-Lee and Crystal McCrary Anthony, Family Trust by Amanda Brown, author of Legally Blonde, and countless other successful titles.
